Ball screws often have some sort of shielding or casing, but even the best protected screw sometimes gets contaminated with debris or dust. Fortunately, cleaning ball screw bearings is typically a simple process.

Clean a Ball Screw Bearing Instructions
Remove the ball screw assembly from the machine. The method of removal will depend on the type of machine being used.

Hold the ball screw under running water, repeatedly rotating the nut mechanism along the length of the screw.

Place the ball screw in a small container filled with an aqueous or organic cleaning agent. Mannesmann Rexroth Engineering warns against using trichloroethylene when cleaning ball screws. Repeatedly rotate the nut mechanism along the length of the screw while it is submerged.

Remove the ball screw from the cleaning agent and dry it with a rag.

Rotate the nut along the length of the screw. Listen for debris in the bearings.

Remove the nut from the screw if the ball bearings are still suspected of being contaminated.

Remove the bearings from the nut with a pair of tweezers. Be careful not to damage, drop or lose the bearings during removal.

Clean the individual bearings and all other screw components with industrial degreaser. Dry the components completely with a rag.

Replace the bearings in the nut mechanism, and reassemble the ball screw.

Lubricate the ball screw with an oil or grease-based lubricant, depending on the manufacturer's recommendation. Rotate the nut along the length of the screw as you do so.
